Downward facing dog ( sometimes called “downward dog” or simply “down dog”) is one of the quintessential beginner yoga poses and an essential part of sun salutations. The pose gets its name—as you might’ve guessed!—from the way dogs stretch. If you exercise patience and listen to your body, it can be one of the most fun beginner yoga poses to learn.
You can leave your toes on the floor or if you’re a pro, lift them off and hover. To do this, try to keep tucked tight, with your heels close to your butt. When you’re ready, push your upper arms against your shins and draw your inner groins deep into the pelvis to help you with the lift.

I started a week ago and the first few days I was so sore but I have been keeping up with it daily and I feel so much better! I haven’t had an excersise progam in the past year, and gained weight so it feel great moving again. Can’t wait to see improvement with my poses and holding time. These students don’t maximize the full benefits of even the basic postures, nor do they create the groundwork to advance the postures. If you’ve been doing yoga several years and scratching your head as to why down dog and triangle still seem so hard, or why you have not been able to find success in the advanced postures (binds, arm balances, backbends, handstands, etc), you should strongly consider revisiting the basics.
